Free course: Introduction to cyber security

The Open University’s Introduction to cyber security: stay safe online course is still available free through OpenLearn. It is an introductory course with an estimated 24 hours of study, covering practical ways to protect your information at home and at work.

Topics include recognising online threats, malware such as viruses and trojans, network security, cryptography, identity theft and risk management. This is a useful starting point if you want to understand the risks behind everyday online services before moving to more specialist study.

When we checked the course page, it showed an update dated 5 March 2026, an Enter course link and downloadable versions including PDF, Word and EPUB. You can use those formats to read offline. Create a free OpenLearn account and sign in if you want to track progress, use all activities and earn the completion rewards.

Completing the course and passing its quizzes can earn an Open University digital badge and a free statement of participation. The provider also lists CPD Standards Office accreditation and 24 CPD points on successful completion. The badge itself is not an Open University accredited qualification.
